Speaking of Japanese historical dramas, in high school I became really interested in Japanese films, including Kurosawa’s Samurai stories.
This lead me to read a translation of Eiji Yoshikawa’s Musashi.
Fun.
I was so excited by the fictionalized telling of Musashi Miyamoto’s legendary adventures.
I loved how he traveled around, challenging everyone to do,
which he won as much with his clever mind as he skilled with the sword.
Like one he beat his nemesis, Kojiro Sasaki with a wooden oar.
He used the tide and the position of the sun to win.
Oh, such a great story.
Mmm.

So great story for me is the crane story.
鶴の恩返し is a beautiful tale of what I believed to be about karma.
What you put into the world, or come back to you in a greater way.
The lonely couple that saved the crane from the trap gained a daughter.
Their life with joy and prosperity.
But then one day, they chose not to respect one small wish of their adapted daughter.
and lost out on spending the rest of their lives with someone to take care of them.
So the next thing we learn is if you don’t give respect, you will not receive it in return.
This story gives sage advice and hopefully guide to many future generation for ever and ever.
