People are marking 150 years of migration from Japan.

People of Japanese descent from all over the world are gathering in Honolulu to mark 150 years of migration from Japan.
Their annual convention is usually held in Japan. But this time, it is taking place where the first group of Japanese emigrants arrived.
In 1868, about 150 people went to Hawaii to work on the islands’ sugar plantations.
The present governor of Hawaii welcomed the participants.
David Ige himself is a third-generation Japanese American.
“Weeding, cutting and hauling sugarcane by hand is back-breaking work,” he told the convention.]
“The immigrants sought to improve conditions and ensure that their children would get an education.
They made sure that their children had everything that they needed.”
About 300 people from more than a dozen countries are taking part.
The participants are focusing on what the original immigrants have left their descendants and on strengthening ties between themselves and Japan.
In an interview with NHK, Ige said that he wants young people to continue the legacy of the first immigrants, including their spiritual values and commitment to hard work.

この祝日には多くのイベントが日本全国で開催されます。
On this holiday many events are held all over Japan.

That must be a very special events to attend. How interesting it would be to meet descendent of Japanese migrants from all over the world.
Yes, and Hawaii is such a beautiful place for the events to be held.
I’m sure the people who gathered there for the convention will enjoy cerebrating all the way the original Japanese emigrant contributed to Hawaiian culture.
I’d like to hear some of their stories myself. It’s inspirational to think of the people who worked so hard far away from their own culture in order to create a better life for their families.
It definitely is!
