高校生からはじめる「現代英語」2018/9/12 Ohtani hits first MLB homer -2
大谷大リーグでの初ホームランを打つ
12 水 Lesson20 Part2

He’s one of the most talked-about major league rookies ever. And on Tuesday he proved he can live up to the hype.

Two days after winning his first game as a pitcher, Japanese two-way star Shohei Ohtani showed fans in Los Angeles what he can do with a bat.

It was the first inning and his first time at the plate in his new hone stadium. He sent the ball soaring out to center field … and just over the fence.

The three-run homer gave the Angels a lead they never lost.

But when he reached the dugout, Ohtani looked perplexed. His teammates gave him the cold shoulder ― at first. The joke is a team tradition for a rookie’s first homer.

Ohtani went on to hit two singles to lead the Angels to a 13-2 victory over the Cleveland Indians.

“I thought it was going to hit the fence,” Ohtani said.
“I was so happy it turned out to be a homer.”

It must be such a relief for Otani san to be able to live up to all the hype.
Yes, I’m sure there’s a lot of pressure when ( ) one of the most talked-about major league rookies ever.
But what a trick for his teammate to play on him. Giving him a cold shoulder like that.
Well, traditions are traditions, especially in sports. I’m sure everyone had a good laugh about it later.
And I bet his team had a lot of fun, celebrating afterwords.
Indeed.
