Limiting homework to save eyes
(China’s Education Ministry is) Limiting homework to save eyes

Schools in China are being asked not to overload students with homework.
This is an effort to save their eyesight.
The Education Ministry is urging schools to take steps to prevent children from becoming nearsighted.
The ministry recommends first- and second-graders be given no homework involving reading or writing.
It suggests homework that can be finished within an hour for grades 3 through 6, and an hour and a half for junior high school.
The ministry is encouraging students to spend more time outdoors.
It also wants them to limit the use of smartphones or computers outside of their studies to an hour a day.
The Chinese government has found that nearsightedness affects 70 percent of students in junior high school and 80 percent of those in high school. These rates are thought to be some of the worst in the world.
President Xi Jinping has told government officials to take action to address the situation.

Those are some really startling rates of nearsightedness. It’s amazing that’s bad enough. That’s the Education Ministry would actually try to limit homework in an effort to fix it.

I wonder if the effort will be successful. There is a lot of pressure on young students to excel. Especially in countries like China where students are trying to compete internationally.

Yes, even if the government is urging schools to change their homework policies. That does not guarantee that the teachers and parents will cooperate.

Schools will need to consider what their priorities really are. Competitive grades or (the) well-being of their students.

I think so.
