False information spread online after Osaka quake
間違った情報がインタネット上で広がった大阪の地震のあと

Following a large earthquake in Osaka Prefecture in June 2018, false rumors about its impact circulated widely on social media.
And many people believed them.
That is according to a study by a team of researchers at the University of Tokyo and a private research firm.
They conducted an online survey of 800 people aged 20 or above who live in the area affected.
In the case of one rumor, 76 of them had been told that the quake had cut off water supplies everywhere in Minoh city.
Many had heard about it online, and nearly two-thirds believed this.
Nearly 40 percent of these who received such incorrect information passed it on to their families and friends without checking if it was true.
The spread of misinformation was likely fueled by anxiety among residents.
“During the disaster, people with good intentions relayed the information they had obtained,” one researcher said.
“But they ended up spreading unfounded rumors.”

-discussion
It is difficult in this age of quick information exchange to be able to tell facts from rumors. I ??? am not be surprised that false information was spread following the Osaka Quake.
I have a similar problem myself when I have to do research for a job or a project. There are a lot of books and web sites created by people who don’t actually know much about the subject.
Checking the source of the information is very important if you want to make sure an alleged fact is really true.
Yes, and questioning things that you hear rather than accepting everything immediately as well.
I agree.
