Staying with China
The government is preparing to abolish all population control measures.
The move comes amid growing concern over the falling birthrate and the aging of the population.
China relaxed its strict policy of one child per family back in 2015.
Couples were allowed to have two children.
That came as the country’s working-age population began to fall in 2012.
Now, a committee of the National People’s Congress has released a draft of the revised Civil Code.
It contains no reference to family planning.
China’s birthrate continues to fall, due to increasing education cost and changing social values.
Proposals to counter the decline have caused controversy.
In one proposal, experts suggested setting up a childbirth fund that people would be required to pay into.
Their money would be refunded if they had a baby.
The idea came under fire.

Growing up, we were taught about China and India’s population problems. It’s amazing that they now have the opposite problem.
These new measures come in part because China’s population control policies were too successful.
That’s true. Sometimes solving one problem just creates a new one.
I hope the government can solve this problem as effectively as they solve the population problem.
This move must come as welcome news to those Chinese who want big families. I hope that people will be happier now.
I hope so too.
