‘Bon’ dancing in Argentina アルゼンチンで盆踊り
It is still winter in Japan, but a Japanese summer festival has just been held in South America.
About 5,000 people have enjoyed traditional Japanese “Bon” dancing in a city near Argentina’s capital, Buenos Aires.
An organization of Japanese-Argentinians holds the festival every year in the city during the South American summer. The dance honors their ancestors.
The participants danced to traditional Japanese folk music and a popular anime song. They circled an elevated wooden platform built for the event.
Some of the Argentinians were wearing yukata, or summer kimono. They danced with quicker movements than one would normally see in Japan.
“I come here every year,” a woman in her 30s said. “The more I dance, the more I like Japan.”
The festival started 16 years ago with the aim of strengthening ties among Japanese-Argentinians.
In recent years, over 80 percent of the participants are residents with no Japanese roots.
