Alvarez tells everyone about a yearly effort to remind people that regular handwashing is a highly effective way to avoid sickness and transmitting germs. McMillan says the pandemic has driven that message home and that he washes his hands diligently now. Alvarez admits that she initially wondered how such a simple action could make a significant difference.
McMillan says, “True, the coronavirus pandemic was a real wake-up call. ”
Ueda says, “Many germs that can make people sick are spread when we don’t take that simple commonsense step.”
The UN website lists many global days, designated to help bring attention to important issues. October 5th, is World Teachers’ Day, for example. And October 16th is World Food Day, which we talk about in a vignette about reducing food waste.

A reminder is something that makes us remember, reminds us of something. Such as, I put a sticky note on my computer as a reminder to call Ted. Or, an email from your boss might say, “Ah, just a reminder, your progress report is due this Friday.”
