Our current vignette talks about the increasing number of people who are unretiring, who are going back to full or part-time work in what traditionally would have been their retirement years. You’ve mentioned how your father retired very early in life, Heather, and how he’s sometimes felt at loose ends.
at loose ends 何もせずに；手持ちぶさたで.
Yes. He’s mentioned it occasionally that perhaps retiring a bit later would have been better. He’s enjoyed a lot of traveling in his retirement and done some work. But I think he sometimes misses the structure and sense of purpose that came from a regular job. Though I am happy to say he’s not lacking at all in the area of a social support network. He has an extensive group of long-time friends and he keeps in regular contact with them. And some of his travel involves going to see those friends around the United States and of course we meet with him regularly in Japan and elsewhere. Combined with his avid reading and interest in world affairs, this gives me confidence that he won’t succumb to loneliness and isolation.
