Now American companies are under pressure to shift the focus from profits for shareholders to serving the interests of all their stakeholders, customers, employees, shareholders and the communities in which they operate. I strongly support the idea of companies contributing to the general welfare. Especially big, successful firms with all their financial strength and name recognition, they can do a great deal of good in the world and they should. But even if companies look at the issue from a purely selfish position, corporate social responsibility is vital. Get a bad rep. online, get pegged as the company that doesn’t care, and they’ll soon pay a steep price in terms of revenue.

You know, this movement is ironic in a way, because Japanese corporations have been accused of not putting enough emphasis on profitability for shareholders. In the future, the two economies will probably find a happy medium.
