figure out -, …を考え出す、…を見つけ出す
Find the solution to some problem or answer some question. You might say, “Oh, I finally figured out how to solve this puzzle.” Or, I can’t figure out what this poem means. We also say, “figure someone out”, meaning come to understand a person, what motivates them, who are they. Like, you know, I think I’ve figured her out. She’s not unfriendly. She’s just shy.
get a sense of -, …の感触を得る、…を感じ取る、…が何となくわかる
Get an idea, get an impression about something. We also say, “give someone a sense of.” Such as, I got a good sense of his sales strategy from his presentation. Or, this data will give you a sense of the current economic climate.
practical 実用的な、実践的な
Nissen says, “I think it might be a good idea to start with practical business-oriented books.”
