The Tale of Genji – Kiritsubo 源氏物語 桐壺
-Kiritsubo 桐壺 -(1)
A long time ago, there lived an emperor. He had many wives, but he loved one lady the most – Lady Kiritsubo. She was not from a high-ranking family. Other ladies of higher rank became jealous, “Why is she loved? Why not me?” Lady Kiritsubo felt distraught and became sick. The emperor thought, “I must protect her!” and loved the lady even more. People whispered that the emperor loved one woman too much. “It is not good for the country to give one woman so much attention,” they said. But the emperor did not listen. Lady Kiritsubo’s father was already dead. She could only rely on the emperor’s love. The emperor took pity on her and tried to protect her.

One day, Lady Kiritsubo gave birth to a beautiful baby boy. He was the emperor’s second son. The first son’s mother, Lady Kokiden, was from a very high-ranking family. Everyone thought that the first son would become the next emperor. But the second son was much more beautiful. The emperor showed stronger love for the younger son. “Will the emperor
make the second son his heir?” Lady Kokiden became worried.
