What’s the difference between Set A and Set B?
A is smaller than Set B. Set B has a bigger fish than Set A. It comes with dessert too.
Well, I want Set B. I’m hungry after all that shopping.
Okay. Let’s get that.
Here you are.
Wow, what a big fish! I remember eating fish like this in Nagasaki.
Do you miss Nagasaki?
Yeah, sometimes. But I’m really enjoying my life here.
-Hidemi said, “I’m hungry after all that shopping.”
So the answer is because she shopped a lot.
They have pretty decorations here.
Yeah. I can always find something cute in this shop. Last year I bought a Santa Claus. This year I want to buy an angel.
How about that one?
It’s lovely! How much is it? Oh, it’s made of silver. It is more expensive than this glass one.
I can help. Here.
Of course. I got a paycheck from my part-time job yesterday. That angel is more beautiful than the other one.
My family watched a Broadway musical or Saturday.
You see a show every year, don’t you?
Yeah, it was amazing! Our seats were better than last year. We were close to the stage.
Wow! Miki I went downtown too. We ate a fantastic lunch near my father’s company. Tomoko’s Kitchen is famous for fish.
That’s my parents’ favorite restaurant. They serve really fresh oysters there.
I also ate a huge piece of cheesecake. It was so tasty.
It will snow tonight. Maybe we can finish the ice skating rink before Christmas.
Do you like to skate, Miki?
I never tried it.
Seriously? We skate every day in winter.
Yeah. There is a large flat field behind our houses. All the neighbors work together to make an ice skating rink. It is the biggest one in our town.
Skating sounds really hard.
Maybe Chris will teach you. He’s an excellent skater
-Anna asked Miki, “Do you like to skate, Miki?”
Miki said,”I never tried it.”
Come on, Sarah! Let’s race.
You know I can’t skate very fast.
Eric, I’ll race you to the other side!
Wow! Look at your brother! He’s faster than David.
Yeah, he’s the fastest skater in our family.
This is hard!
I fell down three times!
It’s not easy at first.
Skating is the most popular winter sport here. We started skating many years ago.
I will never give up!

I want to send New Year’s greetings to my friends in Japan, but I didn’t see any New Year’s postcards in the store.
Why don’t you send season’s greeting cards instead?
That’s the best way to write to your friends. You can write longer messages on them.
I think I will write to Ms. Suzuki in English.
Your English teacher in Nagasaki?
Yes. I want to tell her about school here.
That’s nice. She will like that.
-Miki said, “I think I will write to Ms. Suzuki in English. I want to tell her about school here.”
Don’t talk to Chris now. He’s studying for his exams.
Our exams are in January, aren’t they?
They are. But the teachers make special ones for Chris. He missed too many classes this semester. So he has to make up for them.
He takes classes at the studio, but he hates them.
Yeah. He told me that. I think our teachers are the best.
He’s studying math now. That’s Chris’s them. are the best! hardest subject.
Oh, okay. I’ll talk to him later.
You are very quiet. Are you still thinking about the news from your company?
Yeah. Miki will be sad. She is fitting in so well here. I know, but we have to tell her soon.
You are right. I will talk to her tonight.
I will make her favorite pasta. We can tell her at dinner.
I also have good news for Miki.
Tell me! What is it?
You have to wait.
-Hidemi asked Tatsuo, “Are you still thinking about the news from your company?
Tatsuo said, “Yeah”, then “I will talk to her tonight.”
So the answer is “Tonight”
I have a surprise. We will take a trip to Florida during the vacation.
How exciting! Florida will be warmer than here. We can swim.
Miki, I’m sorry. I also have bad news.
I got a phone call while I was working in my office last week. It was from my boss in Japan. We have to go home in March.
That’s terrible news! Can’t we stay until June? I want to finish the eighth grade here.
A trip to Florida? Lucky you..
How far is it to Florida? I don’t know much about it.
It’s all the way down south.
My cousins visited Everglades National Park. They saw many kinds of birds and wild animals. Some of them are very rare.
Hmm. It sounds wonderful. But I wanted to hang out with you during winter vacation.
I think going to Florida is better. We can hang out after school starts.
I know, but….
How long is the flight to Miami?
It takes about three hours from New York. That’s about ten hours quicker than flying to Japan.
Don’t talk about Japan now. Let’s enjoy our vacation.
Yeah. After we land in Miami, we will rent a car and drive to Everglades National Park. We will visit this alligator farm.
Wow! It says, “The alligator show is the most popular event.”
We can even hold a baby alligator!
Look at that emerald-green water.
The white sand beach is just beautiful.
Yeah. How about going on this boat tour tomorrow? We can see dolphins, sea turtles, pelicans, and even alligators. The guide will also teach us about local plants.
Sounds fantastic. Let’s do that.
How much does it cost?
It’s $100 each. I’ll make a reservation.
Let’s check out the other tours first. Maybe there is a cheaper one.
