Holmey picked up a nearby box of darts and started throwing them at the wall. She had amazing aim for someone so upset. The darts formed the letters “VR.” What did it mean? Very rude? Maybe she finally felt sorry for her bad manners.
“No, that’s not it. They’re my mother’s friend’s initials,” Holmey said, as if she had read my mind. I always felt strange when she did that.
Next to the VR initials, a large birthday card was stuck to the wall with a knife. The card was decorated with gold and looked expensive.
“Is that card from Ms. VR? Your birthday was in January.”
“My mother’s friend does everything at her own pace.”
Holmey’s family lived in England; that’s why she was renting this apartment close to the school. Holmey and I didn’t really talk to each other about our families. That was fine with me. I don’t like to talk about my private life.
“Oh, you got a letter in the mail. It came yesterday. It was wet from the rain, so I put it in the oven. Maybe it’s a birthday card, too. Your birthday is coming up, isn’t it? I think you should write her a thank-you note.”
What?
“It’s from your mom I mean, your stepmom. Your dad’s wife. You know, you never answer her emails or letters. Don’t you think that’s rude?”
I was speechless. How did she know about my family? That was private information! Holmey leaned back on the sofa and started throwing darts at the ceiling.
“Why are you surprised? It wasn’t difficult to figure out. You sometimes get letters from London. There’s a woman’s name on the letters, and I can tell from the handwriting that she’s not a teenager.
I saw a woman with the same name on your social media. I added her as a friend, and we’ve been talking for a while –
Holmey saw the look on my face and stopped. Suddenly, her expression turned sweet.
“I just remembered. Yamada Maya of the musical club sent us a cheesecake. She’s going to be a detective in her next play, so she asked me to look at the script. She sent us the cake from that bakery you like -.
