Morning Tea
オーストラリアには“Morning Tea” という習慣があります。
Australia has a custom called “Morning Tea”.
もともとティー (紅茶) を飲む習慣のあるイギリス人が、移民としてオーストラリアに渡ったときに持ち込んだものだと言われています。
It is said that British people who originally had the habit of drinking tea brought it to Australia when they immigrated to Australia.
モーニング・ティーの時間は学校にもあります。 わたしが勤務していた学校にも、 午前10時くらいから20分程度のモーニング・ティーの時間がありました。
We also have morning tea time at school. The school I worked at also had morning tea for about 20 minutes from around 10am.
ティーとはいえ、必ずしも紅茶を飲むわけではなく、いわば午前中のおやつの時間です。
Although it’s tea, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you drink black tea, it’s a mid-morning snack.
自宅から持参したサンドイッチや野菜スティックを食べている生徒もいれば、 購買で買ったポテトチップスやチョコレートを食べている生徒もいました。
Some students ate sandwiches and vegetable sticks that they brought from home, while others ate potato chips and chocolates that they had purchased.
年に数回、 モーニング・ティーの時間などに、 教員全員が集まってたくさんのケーキなどを食べることがありました。 いわば親睦会です。
ラミントンなどを紅茶とともに楽しみました。
A few times a year, all the faculty members would get together and eat lots of cakes and other things, such as at morning tea time. It is, so to speak, a social gathering.
We enjoyed lamingtons with tea.
このときばかりは、 始業のチャイムが鳴ってもおかまいなしで、「大丈夫、大丈夫、 きょうは特別」 と言って、 先生たちは動きません。
Only at this time, even if the chime for the start of class rings, the teachers say, “It’s okay, it’s okay, today is special,” and they don’t move.
日本の学校にもこういう余裕があったらなぁと思ったものです。
I wished that Japanese schools had this kind of leeway.
