♪ Topic 12, Day 1.
Let’s warm up by chatting about this week’s topic, which is:
Do you like to arrive at school early?
Hmm. Moeno, have you ever arrived at school early?
Yes, I have.
What’s the earliest that you’ve ever arrived for school?
Yeah. When you arrived, how much time was there before school started?
There was(→were) 45 minutes.
Forty-five minutes? Oh, that’s pretty early.
Yeah.
How about you, Sandy?
I would arrive at school about 6:50.
6:50. Oh, that is early.
Yeah. Because I had band practice at seven o’clock.
Ah, I see. Have you ever arrived for school late, Moeno?
Yes, I have.
How late were you?
I was late about 10 to 15 minutes.
About 10 to 15 minutes late.
That’s not too bad.
So, probably all of us – listeners, too, all of us have experienced being early to school and being late.
And probably also being just in time.
Right. And there are both good points and bad points to being early and late.
So, this week, we’re asking, “Do you like to arrive at school early?”
Moeno, on Day 5, you’ll tell us whether you like to arrive at school early, and why or why not.
Okay.
Okay. Now, let’s move on to this week’s dialogue.
Ten minutes before the start of school, Vicky hurries toward the school gates.
Jake arrives at the same time, slowly pedaling his bicycle.

Moeno, what words did you catch?
“Just in time.”
Good.
And Vicky says, “The train was late today.”
Yes. Good.
Very good.
And “pancakes.”
Jake says, “Plenty of time.”
“Plenty of X” means that you have “a lot of X” or “more than enough X.”
Right. Jake means that he has more than enough time, so he doesn’t need to hurry.
We’ll find out more about the things Vicky and Jake say on Day 2 and Day 3.

-New Words, New Phrases
Here are some phrases that you might have heard for the first time.
Today’s first phrase is: take one’s time.
“To take one’s time” means “to do something slowly, without hurrying.”
