Yen slumps to 150 per dollar

The yen briefly weakened to the 150 level against the U.S. dollar on Thursday for the first time in 32 years.
The Japanese currency has depreciated about 30 percent against the greenback this year.
Investors are speculating the U.S. Federal Reserve will continue to raise key interest rates to tackle the country’s decades-high level of inflation. That has pushed up the yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note to 4 percent.
It’s the prospect of a wider gap between Japanese and U.S. interest rates that’s accelerating yen selling, as investors seek higher yields in the United States.

BEER AGED UNDER THE SEA
Beer aged under the sea

A group of researchers in Japan is taking a novel approach to producing beer, aging it under the sea.
Two hundred bottles were kept at a depth of 3 to 4 meters for three and a half months. The experiment was conducted off Shizuoka in central Japan, and the aim is to produce a local specialty.
The researchers say the beer had more bubbles and a stronger aroma. It also had more sediment than usual and what appeared to be yeast at the bottom.
The group has previously done similar tests with wine and sake and found that the process changed the “umami,” or savory taste.
The group is conducting the research with a local brewery. It plans to analyze the changes that occur and try different depths and durations in order to create a better bottle of beer.

Japanese researchers produce hair in vitro
2022年10月22日のニュース

Japanese researchers say they’ve successfully produced hair shafts in the laboratory. They say it could lead to a cure for hair loss in people.
The group, which includes Professor Fukuda Junji of Yokohama National University, published its findings in the U.S. journal “Science Advances.”
They extracted two types of cells from the skin of a mouse embryo, then used proteins to link them. The researchers say that after 10 days they could see hair shafts and follicles.
They transplanted 5-millimeter-long hair shafts into the skin of nude mice. They say normal hair cycles began in about three weeks.
The scientists say this is the first time that hair shafts with follicles were produced in vitro with near 100 percent efficiency.

“It would be quite a revolutionary treatment if we can produce hair shafts and then transplant them to human cells.”
