20 MORE UKRAINIAN EVACUEES ARRIVE IN JAPAN
A Japanese government aircraft with 20 Ukrainian evacuees has touched down at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport. The government plans to offer them assistance in cooperation with private companies and local governments.
The evacuees, aged six to 66, disembarked after testing negative for COVID-19 and went through immigration. They’re now being taken to their accommodations.
The development follows Japan’s Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa’s visit to Poland to see how it’s handling an influx of Ukrainian evacuees.
The government plans to offer support for evacuees who do not have relatives or acquaintances in Japan. It’ll cover their daily needs and medical care, as well as language lessons, job training, and education for children. The government estimates the aid will last about six months.
Japan has already accepted about 400 Ukrainian evacuees. A Ukrainian woman who settled in Maebashi, north of Tokyo, started taking Japanese lessons on Monday.A language school there is offering free classes for evacuees.
ASTRONOMERS SPOT MOST DISTANT STAR EVER OBSERVED
International researchers say they’ve found the most distant star ever observed, a whopping 12.9 billion light-years from Earth.
The team includes astronomers from Japan’s Chiba University. It used the Hubble Space Telescope to spot the celestial object.
The star, nicknamed “Earendel,” is estimated to be at least 50 times the mass of the sun.The researchers say it’s about 4 billion light-years farther than the previous record for an observed distant star.
They were able to detect the star due to a phenomenon called gravitational lensing, which made the star appear brighter.Light from the star traveled 12.9 billion years before reaching Earth, meaning it existed about 900 million years after the Big Bang gave birth to the universe.
Astronomers say the discovery opens a new window into the dawn of the cosmos.
COOKING OIL PRICE SPIKE HITS INDONESIA AS RAMADAN STARTS
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is also impacting people’s lives in Asia, causing the price of cooking oil to spike. That’s being felt in kitchens in Indonesia as Ramadan starts in the world’s largest Muslim country.
Muslims account for more than 80 percent of Indonesia’s population. During the fasting month, they only eat and drink between sunset and sunrise.
Early on Sunday, stalls in Jakarta were crowded with customers buying deep-fried food. But many shops have raised prices or reduced the volume of their products.
“We’re worried. We’re sorry for our customers, but we can’t do business if we don’t raise prices.”
The price of cooking oil has skyrocketed up to 70 percent from a year ago as global demand for Indonesian palm oil increases. This comes amid concerns over a shortage of sunflower oil, which is produced mainly in Ukraine and Russia.
JAPAN LOWERS LEGAL AGE OF ADULTHOOD TO 18
Japan is welcoming 18- and 19-year-olds into adulthood, lowering the legal age of majority for the first time in more than a century. But don’t raise your glass just yet.
The teens will still have to wait until they’re 20 to drink, smoke, or gamble. But the revised Civil Code will let them make many adult decisions without their parents. That includes getting a credit card or taking out a loan.
The change has some people worried that fraudsters will use this opportunity to prey on young victims.
“I realized yesterday that I was coming of age today. But I don’t feel like I’ve become an adult at all.”
Japan is grappling with an aging society, declining birth rate, and shortage of workers. The government hopes that lowering the legal age of adulthood will encourage teens to take a more active role in society.
