1ST GRAIN SHIP SINCE RUSSIAN INVASION LEAVES UKRAINE
!st grain ship since russian invasion leaves Ukraine
2022年8月1日のニュース
We begin with a positive sign from Ukraine. The country’s infrastructure minister says a ship loaded with corn has departed from the southern port of Odesa. It’s the first since Russia blocked shipments through the Black Sea at the start of the invasion.
The cargo vessel Razoni sailed from the port on Monday. It’s the result of a deal between Ukraine and Russia, which was brokered by Turkey and the UN last month. It was meant to restart grain exports by guaranteeing safe passage for ships in the Black Sea.
Ukraine and Russia produce about a third of the world’s wheat, so the invasion has triggered a shortage of food.
The UN says the Razoni is carrying over 26,000 tons of corn. It’s expected to reach Istanbul on Tuesday, where it’ll be inspected.
The cargo is headed for Lebanon, where millions of people have been living through a severe financial crisis.

PELOSI’S VISIT TO TAIWAN DRAWS BEIJING’S BACKLASH
Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan draws Beijing’s backlash
2022年8月3日のニュース
The U.S. House speaker has arrived in Taiwan, demonstrating unwavering commitment to support. Nancy Pelosi’s visit is the highest-level trip by a U.S. official in a quarter century. But Chinese officials immediately reacted with backlash.
Pelosi landed in Taipei on Tuesday night. She is on an Asian tour that includes announced visits to Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, and Japan.
Taiwan’s presidential office said Pelosi is set to meet President Tsai Ing-wen on Wednesday and will have lunch with her. Pelosi says in a statement that discussions will focus on reaffirming support and promoting shared interests.
Moments after she landed in Taipei, The Washington Post released her opinion piece. She says the U.S. must remember the vow to support the defense of Taiwan.
Chinese officials have been warning against the visit. The Foreign Ministry released a statement shortly after, saying it has a severe impact on the political foundation of relations between China and the U.S.

RUSSIANS TO LEAVE SPACE STATION
Russians to leave space station
2022年7月27日のニュース
Astronauts from Russia and the U.S. have looked beyond their rivalry for decades to operate a laboratory in the skies. But they’ve been challenged to hold on to that spirit of cooperation. And now, the Russians say they’ll pull out of the International Space Station.
The Russians and Americans started building the ISS in 1998. They spent years putting together the pieces. They’ve collaborated with astronauts from Japan, Canada, and Europe.
But now, the head of the Russian space agency says his team will leave the station and build their own.

“We operate within a framework of cooperation at the International Space Station. Without a doubt, we will honor all our obligations to our partners. But the decision to withdraw after 2024 has been made.”
NASA officials say they haven’t heard anything official from their Russian counterparts.
