27 木 Lesson179 疑問の意図のない疑問文②
Hi, everyone. My name is Chris McVay. I had no breakfast today. I’m hungry. Let’s get this lesson done as quickly as possible.
Okay.
Wait, wait, wait, wait.
Huh?
You guys did your greeting. What about me?
Go on then.
Hey guys. This is Rosa Akino. Let’s have a handsome lesson today.

Mom, I’m hungry. Do we have any snacks? Snacks?
We’ll be having dinner in just an hour or so. By the way, have you done your homework yet?
It’s the first day of my winter vacation. I have lots of time to do it.
You promised to do one hour of homework every day. That means every day.
OK, I’ll do it, but only if I can have some potato chips.
Excuse me? Who do you think you are? Just get started on that homework right now, young man! Or you won’t have any dinner, never mind snacks. Understood?
OK, OK, I got it.

-Who do you think you are?
I think I am Hiroto.
So, actually, what exactly does that sentence mean?
It’s actually, ah, very angry phrase, right, Chris?
You know, this really means, someone who has no special authority acts as though they have authority. So can you imagine a total stranger comes up to me, and start telling me how to raise my own kids. So I would say, “Huh? Who do you think you are? You can’t tell me how to raise my kids. Something like that.”

1). Who are you to be telling me how to raise my kids?
= Who are you to tell me -?
2). Our boss is so unpredictable. Who knows what he’s going to do next!
3). She’s happy, but what about me?

» 隠す

Chris, could you explain the special meaning of “what about -?”?
Yeah, sure. I mean, everybody knows that just like “How about -? “, “What about -?” can be used to make a suggestion. But it has a special meaning like “Don’t forget.” For example, what about going to karaoke tonight? Okay, but what about tomorrow’s test? In other words, don’t forget we have a test tomorrow. So in that case you can only use “what about -“, not “how about -?”

Well, how was the great lessons?
Wait a minute. What are you doing? We haven’t finished the show yet.
Oh, I thought we were done, I was gonna go for a break.
No, no, no.
All right, well, what are you waiting for, Sensei?
