ラジオ英会話 2019/2/12 My parents never let me use my phone
12 火 Lesson227 文型⑤ 目的語説明型②
Hey, everyone. This is Rosa Akino. Ah, Chris never let me go second in the greet.
Hi, everyone. Chris McVay here. As all you know I let Rosa do exactly what she wants. Always!

Why do you keep checking your phone? We’re having dinner together.
I’m just checking my messages.
My parents never let me use my phone at the dinner.
Really? Your parents are too strict. My parents don’t mind my using m phone at dinner.
That’s unbelievable. My parents would get so mad. They always say dinner is a time to talk with each other as a family.
They have a good point, but my friends always send me messages even during dinnertime.
Why don’t you just reply later?
They expect me to reply quickly.
I disagree with that attitude.

My parents never let me use my phone at the dinner.
So, is it possible to use “make” here?
No! My parents never make me use my phone.
Yeah, it’s funny.
So, how about “have”?
It’ equally bad, right?
That’s, just weird. [wíərd] 奇妙

That’s right.

So, isn’t it surprising that “make, let and have” receive the same translation?
Yes, it’s really surprising, because it’s clear that each verb has its own specific meaning, and it’s own nuance, if you like.
That’s right. So it’s really important, when you’re trying to learn English, that you learn to differentiate between these three words, so that you can pick out the appropriate word for each situation that you’re trying to describe.
