-等位接続と従位接続　Coordinating Conjunctions and Subordinating Conjunctions
接続には2つのリズムがあります。 ここまで紹介した and or but は典型的な「等位接続詞」。
(Connection has two rhythms. The and or but introduced so far are typical “coordinating conjunctions”)
節を同等の強さでポンポンと並べます。
これからご紹介するbecause や、下の例のifなどは 「従位接続詞」。 主たる節(主節)の理由・時・条件などを述べるための補助的な節(従属節)を導入します。 主節の修飾要素と考えてもいいでしょう。

【等位接続】
My brother played the guitar, and I sang.
兄がギターを弾いて、 僕は歌った。

I sang, and he played the guitar.
私は歌った、そして彼はギターを弾いた。

I enjoyed playing the piano, but I was so tired.
私はピアノを弾くことを楽しんだけれど、とても疲れました。

Just follow me, or you will die.
ついてこい、さもないと死ぬぞ。

I don’t like cats but I do like dogs.
猫は好きではありませんが犬は好きです。

It’s rainy today, so we stay home.
今日は雨だから、家にいます。

【従位接続】
If you wait a few minutes, I’ll give you a ride.
従属節, 主節
もし数分待ってくれたら、車に乗せていってあげるよ。

I don’t like the cake because it’s too sweet.
そのケーキは甘すぎるので好きではない。

My dog never barks unless he is hungry.
私の犬はお腹が空かない限り吠えません
