Day 10 Introduce your hometown

Today’s conversation has eleven turns.
Here is the scene for today’s Taiwa Karaoke. You’re looking at a map of Japan.
And your friend asks you some questions. Just reply in your own words.
By the way, that friend is going to be me today.
All right. Imagine you and Jenny are standing in front of a big map of Japan?

Oh, is this a map of Japan?

OK. So, where is Kyoto?

On this map, where in Japan are we now?

So, what’s this area or province called?

I see some mountains in this part of Japan. Are these volcanoes?

Japan is not just one island, right?

Look at this island. What’s this island?

Have you ever visited any islands in Japan?

Oh, I see. As a child, did you spend more time at the ocean or in the mountains?

What’s the most famous mountain near here?

Well, we should go on a hike sometime this summer.

OK, time’s up. Well, did you reply each time? It’s not easy the first time, right, Jenny?
That’s right. It takes a little practice.
And you need some some sample replies.

Oh, is this a map of Japan?
Yes. Let’s check it out.
OK. So, where is Kyoto?
The city of Kyoto is right here. It’s surrounded by mountains.
On this map, where in Japan are we now?
We’re right here. At the foot of Mount Kita*.
So, what’s this area or province called?
The prefecture or province is called Yamanashi. It’s located in eastern Japan.
I see some mountains in this part of Japan. Are these volcanoes?
Yep. Some are volcanoes, but they’re not all active volcanoes.
Japan is not just one island, right?
Right. Japan is actually a chain of islands. There’re four major islands, here, here, here and here. And lots of smaller islands.
Look at this island. What’s this island?
It’s an island called Oshima. It’s about two hours by ferry from Tokyo.
Have you ever visited any islands in Japan?
Yeah. I used to go to Sadogashima with my parents every summer. It has a lot of good seafood. Oh. That brings back memories.
Oh, I see. As a child, did you spend more time at the ocean or in the mountains?
The mountains! We ski in the winter and hike in the other seasons.
What’s the most famous mountain near here?
The most famous one is Mount Fuji. It’s here. It’s surrounded by five beautiful lakes.
Well, we should go on a hike sometime this summer.
Yes. That’s a good idea.
