Quick Q&AS
(Janni Olsson)

-In Sweden, English is familiar from childhood

Steve (S): For our first interview of the new year, we will talk to Mr. Yanni, who is our Friday partner on the show.
Yanni (J): Nice to meet you!
S: Mr. Janni, you are from Sweden, and Sweden has many exchanges with neighboring countries such as Finland, Norway, and Denmark.
J: Yes. My paternal grandparents are Swedish, but my maternal grandfather is Norwegian and my grandmother Danish. There are also many people in Sweden who have roots in European countries other than Northern Europe.
S: Unlike Japan, it’s easy to cross the border because it’s connected to the land.
J: You can freely travel to and from the Nordic countries by car or train. Also, Norwegian and Danish speak the same language. For example, is it like people in Tokyo talking to people in Aomori? There are some dialects that I don’t understand, but the overall meaning is clear…
S: What about English? Scandinavian countries consistently rank in the top 10 in English proficiency rankings* of over 110 countries worldwide. Is English spoken everywhere in Sweden?
J: Yes. Most Swedes learn English from an early age.
S: So you have opportunities to use English on a daily basis. Is it from childhood?
J: Yes. Ever since we were kids, we have watched American and British TV shows without dubbing. It has Swedish subtitles, but the audio is in English, so my ears are used to English. Most of the popular programs were in English.
S: That alone will improve your listening skills. How was your English education at school?
J: In our English classes, we have a lot of group work and presentations, so we have a lot of opportunities to actually speak English.
S: It’s not a class where you just passively listen to what the teacher is saying, it’s a class that emphasizes dialogue. It is similar to school education in America.
J: Nowadays, it is generally said that in order to enter a public high school in Sweden, students must have passing grades in three subjects: Swedish, English and mathematics. Looking back, in my case, the biology class I took in high school was taught in English. At university, all the texts you used were in English.

– Write Janni and read as Janni.

S: By the way, which of Yanni’s parents speaks better English?
J: Mom. Her father speaks English fluently, but she feels that her mother speaks better because she is talkative.
S: I see. In the environment Yanni grew up in, there were opportunities to use English as a matter of course in daily life and at school, and her parents did not feel that they were not good at English. All conditions are met to become bilingual. That is very different from the environment in which Japanese people are placed.

– Janni

What is your favorite food these days?
“Ochazuke”. It is such a lovely dish to have when you are feeling a bit tired or cold.
What were you into when you were a child?
I was into Hong Kong action movies, which later led to me starting Kung Fu.
What is your favorite word?
The Japanese word “Unkai” (雲海), which means a sea of clouds. I started to hike
mountains in Japan, and when I climbed my first mountain (Fujisan), I was met by
a sea of clouds at sunrise. The beautiful view that I saw that day is the reason I got
hooked on mountain climbing.
