エミリーがポールの家に忘れた荷物を、忙しいエミリーの代わりにテルマが取りに来ました。
(Thelma comes to pick up the package that Emily left at Paul’s house on Emily’s behalf.)

初めてポールの家に立ち寄ったテルマ。 その家の装飾に関してこのようにコメントします。
(Thelma stops by Paul’s house for the first time. I would like to comment on the decoration of the house.)
直訳すると「ホントにすてきなおうちだと言わざるをえません」です。
いきなりほめるのではなく、 I have to say … をつけると、
「すばらしさゆえに私は言わなければならない」というようなキモチが前面に出て、 まだ親しくない相手にも好ましく響くのでしたね。
