Athletics: Yegzaw wins Fukuoka Int’l Marathon, Nishiyama, Hosoya medal

FUKUOKA (Kyodo) — Bayelign Yegzaw of Ethiopia held off Japan’s Yusuke Nishiyama to win the Fukuoka International Marathon on Sunday, with Kyohei Hosoya also finishing on the podium.
Yegzaw moved ahead just before the 40-kilometer mark and held on to cross in 2 hours, 7 minutes, 51 seconds in the race that began and finished at Fukuoka’s Heiwadai Athletic Stadium.
Nishiyama repeated as a runner-up, having also fallen short of the top spot last year, finishing five seconds behind the winner this time as his late spurt at around 39 km was quickly undone by Yegzaw.
Hosoya, who was in a three-man leading pack until late on, finished in 2:08:09.
Takumi Oishi was fourth, a further 42 seconds back, as the top three Japanese runners booked their berths at the Marathon Grand Championship, a qualifying trial for the Los Angeles Olympics, scheduled in 2027.

福岡──エチオピアのバイェリグン・イェグザウが日本の錦山祐介の追い上げを退け、日曜日に行われた福岡国際マラソンを制した。細谷恭平も表彰台に上った。
イェグザウは40キロ地点の直前で前に出て、そのまま粘り、レースのスタート・フィニッシュ地点である福岡・平和台陸上競技場に 2時間7分51秒 でゴールした。
錦山は昨年に続き2位となり、今年もトップには届かなかった。39キロ付近での後半のスパートは、イェグザウによってすぐに打ち消され、今回は優勝者の5秒後にフィニッシュした。
細谷は終盤まで3人の先頭集団に入っていたが、2時間8分9秒 でゴールした。
大石巧海は4位で、さらに42秒遅れでフィニッシュ。トップ3の日本選手は、2027年に開催されるロサンゼルス五輪の代表選考レースである「マラソングランドチャンピオンシップ（MGC）」への出場枠を獲得した。
