TORONTO (Kyodo) — Will Smith belted a go-ahead solo home run in the 11th inning and Yoshinobu Yamamoto got the last eight outs as the Los Angeles Dodgers rallied for a 5-4 Game 7 win over the Toronto Blue Jays and back-to-back World Series championships on Saturday.
Japanese ace Yamamoto (5-1) was named World Series MVP in the wake of his clutch performance out of the bullpen, which sealed a 4-3 win in the roller-coaster best-of-seven series a day after he pitched the Dodgers to a do-or-die Game 6 victory.
The 27-year-old right-hander, who went the distance in the Dodgers’ Game 2 win, became the first Japanese player to receive the award since Hideki Matsui with the New York Yankees in 2009.
“I wasn’t thinking about anything. It felt as if I’d returned to a boy playing junior baseball,” Yamamoto said of his unanticipated start. “After pitching last night, I had treatment and was getting ready just in case.”
Making a two-way start, Shohei Ohtani went 2-for-5 at the plate but was knocked out after just 2-1/3 innings on the mound by Bo Bichette’s three-run homer.
Los Angeles rallied late with solo home runs from Max Muncy in the eighth and Miguel Rojas in the ninth to tie the game 4-4 heading into the last regulation frame at Rogers Centre.
Smith put the Dodgers ahead for the first time with his big fly to left field off regular starter Shane Bieber (2-1) with two out in the top of the 11th before Yamamoto got out of a two-on, one-out jam with a double play in the home half to clinch the championship.
“I didn’t have real confidence about whether I could pitch until going to the bullpen,” Yamamoto said upon accepting his MVP trophy. “I don’t know what’s happening but it’s just great. I did everything I could and I’m really happy to have won with this team.”
Ohtani got out of the second with the bases loaded before running into trouble facing the top of the high-powered Toronto lineup in the bottom of the third.
Los Angeles manager Dave Roberts opted to intentionally walk Vladimir Guerrero Jr., putting runners on the corners before Bichette sent Ohtani’s first-pitch slider deep over center field for a 3-0 lead.
Teoscar Hernandez’s RBI sacrifice fly put the Dodgers on the board at 3-1 in the top of the fourth before tensions boiled over in the home half after Los Angeles reliever Justin Wrobleski hit Andres Gimenez with a pitch, leading to the benches clearing and warnings for both teams.
Ohtani hit his second single in a fifth inning that ended with Los Angeles unable to score while stranding two runners.
Gimenez’s RBI double made it 4-2 for Toronto in the sixth before Muncy and Rojas’ blasts brought the Dodgers back to life. Ohtani flew out to left field as the next batter after Rojas in the ninth, dropping short of the fence as he tried for a go-ahead blast.
Called in to replace fellow rotation starter Blake Snell with one out in the bottom of the ninth, Yamamoto hit Alejandro Kirk with a pitch to load the bags but escaped without surrendering a walk-off run when Andy Pages made a highlight-reel outfield catch to retire the side.
The Dodgers claimed their ninth World Series title, repeating as champions for the first time in franchise history and becoming the first back-to-back winners since the Yankees won three in a row from 1998-2000.
“We had no easy games, including the regular season and it’s a title we all grabbed together,” said Ohtani, who is expected to collect his fourth regular-season MVP award this year.
“It’s just finished so I want to bask in this glory to the fullest for today and tomorrow.”
