The World: The Venezuela model
Good morning, world. There’s a reason Donald Trump often references the January operation that captured Venezuela’s president, Nicolás Maduro, when making public statements about the war in Iran. He considers the midnight raid that toppled Maduro a success — or as he put it, “the perfect scenario.”
More than three months later, it’s clear that Iran is very far from a perfect scenario. (More on this below.) But is the U.S. intervention in Venezuela as much of a success as Trump thinks it is? Today my colleague Anatoly Kurmanaev writes about how there have been some wins, but the big prize — oil contracts for U.S. companies — has not yet materialized.
