Two scientists transformed the threat of the pandemic and helped people worldwide resume their lives. Katalin Kariko and Drew Weissman laid the groundwork for COVID vaccines. Now they’ve been awarded the Nobel Prize in medicine.
Members of the panel say the laureates contributed to vaccine development during one of the “greatest threats to human health” in history. Kariko and Weissman enabled the creation of what are known as messenger RNA vaccines.
The scientists say they never expected to get the prize so quickly.

“Just realizing how important it had the potential to be. And that’s why we never gave up. And we just kept persevering and kept working at it. And here we are today.”
Kariko and Weissman know the applications of their work can go further. They say they hope, one day, such vaccines may even help protect against cancer and other deadly diseases.

We begin in Tokyo, where Japanese talent agency Johnny & Associates says it’s dissolving to focus on compensating the victims of its late founder. The agency has been at the center of a scandal over sex abuse of young male entertainers involving Johnny Kitagawa. It also says it will establish a new, separate company to manage its roster of talent.
The company says 478 people have come forward as of the end of last month with allegations of abuse involving Kitagawa. Of those, 325 are seeking compensation, which the company will begin distributing from November under a new name: “Smile-Up.”
On Monday, details were provided about a new company being formed to manage the agency’s stars, with no financial involvement from its former president, Fujishima Julie. The new president says they will allow talent to sign individual contracts and have more say over their career paths.

Japanese law reins in ‘stealth marketing’

It’s now illegal in Japan to engage in stealth marketing. That means no one can pretend they don’t have any relationship with firms whose products they’re promoting. The deceptive advertising technique has been on the rise and causing confusion among consumers.
The country’s Consumer Affairs Agency has banned the practice with the law against unjustifiable premiums and misleading representation. The regulation takes effect from Sunday.
The new regulation covers all media, including the internet, newspapers, and television. It requires advertisements to clearly display words such as “ad” or “promotion” to make sure consumers can identify marketing.
When regulators identify violations, they can ban an advertisement or order that actions be taken to prevent recurrences.

Slovakia election: Winner looks to end aid to Ukraine

A Slovakian left-wing opposition party intent on stopping military aid to Ukraine has come out on top in the country’s parliamentary election. Slovakia is a member of the NATO military alliance backing Ukraine against Russia.
The Smer-SSD party received about 23 percent of the votes in Saturday’s election. The party is led by Slovakia’s former prime minister, Robert Fico.
Fico told a news conference he’s going to turn attention to fighting rising prices and other problems. Fico and his party blame Russian sanctions for surging prices that have squeezed average Slovaks.
Slovakia was the first NATO member to send fighter jets to neighboring Ukraine. And it was aligned with the European Union on sanctions against Russia.
Fico said he will seek coalition partners to form a new government in the next two weeks or so. It remains to be seen whether that coalition will halt military support to Ukraine.

A plan to chop down trees as part of a redevelopment project in central Tokyo is facing strong opposition from residents. Work was slated to start in September, but now the developers say it will be put off until at least early next year.
Jingu Gaien is a popular and historical green space in the capital. The new development would rebuild a rugby stadium and put up high-rises.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government approved the plan earlier this year but told developers to save as many trees as possible. The plan called for some trees to be transplanted and for over 700 of them to be chopped down. More than 50,000 people signed a petition by residents demanding that the Tokyo government reconsider the project.
Lead developer Mitsui Fudosan announced Friday it would review the plan.
The UN-linked International Council on Monuments and Sites has criticized the project. The conservation body issued what it calls a heritage alert, branding the loss of open space and trees as unacceptable at a time of global climate change.
