DIPLOMATS PUSH FOR HUMANITARIAN AID
Diplomats push for humanitarian aid

Diplomats are doing what they can to help Palestinians fleeing for their lives. They’ve seen more than 4,200 people killed in fighting between Israeli forces and members of the Islamic militant group Hamas. And they’re struggling to get supplies to those in need.
Diplomats from the United Nations, the U.S., and other member nations are trying to set up a “humanitarian corridor.” But Israeli leaders have ordered a “complete siege” and have bombarded Gaza in retaliation for an attack earlier this month on their territory. They’ve deprived residents of food, water, and fuel.
Palestinians in the northern half of Gaza have been forced to flee their homes. And they fear the Israelis will invade. So they’ve joined an exodus to the south. Many are hoping to cross over into Egypt.

Doctors have conducted a successful experiment using a robot system to perform remote surgery between Singapore and Japan.
The device, called “Hinotori,” is Japan’s first surgical robot. The goal in the experiment was to remove a cancer tumor from an artificial stomach.
A surgeon used a so-called “cockpit” located in Singapore, while an “operation unit” in Japan performed the surgery. The unit has four arms equipped with various instruments and an endoscopic camera.
Professor Uyama Ichiro said he noticed latency, or delays, of about one-tenth of a second in the device’s movements. But he added that he was able to adapt to the lag. Uyama said he hopes to teach surgery remotely with the assistance of robots.

A PEACEFUL STAY: THE HOTEL THAT HOUSES A TEMPLE
A peaceful stay: The hotel that houses a temple

Modern comfort meets ancient serenity. A hotel set to open in Osaka next month will house a centuries-old Buddhist temple in its lobby.
The main hall of the Mitsutera Temple dates back more than 200 years. It now occupies the ground-floor entrance to the 15-story hotel.
The unusual combination is the result of financial necessity. Temple attendants were struggling to pay the building’s maintenance costs. By leasing their land to the hotel, they can raise the money they need. And the hotel operator gets access to some prime real estate. It’s a win-win.
A deputy priest said the deal will protect the temple for many years to come.

“It’s a relief to know that we can maintain the main hall for another 50 to 100 years.”

Shogi star Fujii holds all 8 major titles
2023年10月12日のニュース

The Japanese board game of shogi has seen the emergence of a new superstar. Fujii Sota is now the first player in history to hold all eight major titles at once. And he’s all of just 21 years old.
Shogi is a traditional game similar to chess. Fujii faced off in the Oza championship against Nagase Takuya, 10 years his senior and the defending champion.
Wednesday’s match in Kyoto was the fourth of a best-of-five series. The players spent a long time pondering their moves. Nagase gradually got the upper hand. After they had used up their allotted time, Fujii and Nagase had just a minute to make their moves.
At that point, the tide turned against Nagase, and he conceded after the 138th move of the match. Fujii won the series with three wins and one loss.

JAPAN GOVT. REQUESTS COURT ORDER TO DISSOLVE RELIGIOUS GROUP
2023年10月13日のニュース

Japan’s education and culture ministry has requested a court order to dissolve the religious group formerly known as the Unification Church.
On Friday, the ministry submitted about 5,000 pieces of evidence to the Tokyo District Court. They were gathered through interviews with group members and other related people. The decision to submit the request was made following a meeting with an advisory panel the day before.
Education and culture minister Moriyama Masahito said the group’s practice of collecting donations and soliciting new members violated civil law and caused significant damage.
If the court order is granted, the group would lose its religious corporation and tax exemption status, but still be allowed to conduct religious activities.
