gateway to success、直訳するなら「成功への門（のような入り口）、成功への道」

これは「登竜門」の語源となった、急流を登りきったコイが竜になったという古代中国の言い伝えを英語で表現したものです。この言い伝えを再現した「飛龍天神ねぶた」は、太宰府天満宮で１０月いっぱい楼門に飾られていて、１８日も多くの人たちがそれぞれの願いを込めて楼門をくぐっていました。
(This is an English expression of an ancient Chinese legend, which is the origin of the word “Toryumon”, that a carp that climbed a rapid was transformed into a dragon. The Hiryu Tenjin Nebuta, which recreates this legend, was displayed at the tower gate of Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine throughout October, and many people continued to pass through the tower gate on the 18th to make their wishes.)

この「登竜門」とgateway to successですが、実は似て非なる表現ではないでしょうか。
「登竜門」は「成功へと至る難しい関門」のことです。これは日本ではよく知られている言葉ですが、「登竜門」の意味や言い伝えを知らない英語圏の人に正確に説明しようとすると、回りくどい言い方になりがちでしょう。

Oh, let me give it a try. Well, it’s from a legend where carp swim upstream and make a big jump over waterfall at a dragon gate and that turns that into dragons which is better than being carps. So well, the carp like people were trying to clear a big hurdle or get to it turn themselves dreaming of becoming.
(鯉が川を遡り、龍門で滝を大きく飛び越えると、龍になるという伝説に由来しているんだ。だから、鯉は大きなハードルを越えようとしたり、そのハードルに到達しようとしたりすることで、自分自身がドラゴンになることを夢見るようになるんだ。)
