友達ジェニーの誕生日の計画を立てている2人。 サプライズパーティーをやろうとオリビアが言いますが、 エミリーは、 ジェニーがサプライズを嫌がることを知っています。 (The two are making plans for their friend Jenny’s birthday. Olivia suggests throwing a surprise party, but Emily knows Jenny doesn’t like surprises.)
そのため、「いい案だけど、ちょっと問題が」というキモチで The thing is, … を使っています。 このthing は problem (問題)に近い意味ですが、 problem よりも軽く響くため、相手の意見を受けつつ、ちょっとした問題点を指摘したいときによく使います。
