インドの古い物語に、象とは何かを学びたいと願う 6 人の男についての物語があります。男性は誰も目が見えないので、象に触れて研究します。
人はそれぞれ、異なる部分に触れ、異なるアイデアを得る。ある男性が象の脇腹を触って、「象は壁のようなものです！」と言います。別の象は長い歯に触れて、「象は鋭い棒のようなものです！」と言います。 3人目はその長い鼻に触れて、「いいえ、それはヘビのようです！」と言います。他の人たちは足、耳、尻尾に触れて、ゾウが木、扇、またはロープに似ていると判断します。
これは、インターネットの間違った使い方についての物語かもしれません。インターネットは、瞬時に情報の世界を私たちにもたらします。コンピューター、タブレット、スマートフォンを使用すると、いつでも、どこでも、ほとんどすべての情報を簡単に見つけることができます。電車の時刻表やチケットの価格などの簡単な情報については、1 つの Web サイトをチェックするだけで十分な場合があります。しかし、理解できないことについて明確に理解したい場合は、複数の場所を調べる必要があります。 1 つのサイトだけをチェックするのは、象の一部だけを触るようなものです。簡単に間違った考えをしてしまいます。
今月、ミカさんの父親は「インターネット上のすべてを信頼することはできない」と言います。多くのサイトから情報を収集します。多くの情報源に基づいて自分の意見を展開します。
インターネットを使用するときは、頭も使うことを忘れないでください。

There’s an old story from India about six men who want to learn what an elephant is. None of the men can see, so they study the elephant by touching it.
Each man touches a different part and gets a different idea. One man touches the elephant’s side and says, “An elephant is like a wall!” Another touches its long tooth and says, “An elephant is like a sharp stick!” The third touches its long nose and says, “No, it’s like a snake!” The others touch the leg, the ear, and the tail, and decide that an elephant is like a tree, a fan, or a rope.
This could be a story about the wrong way to use the Internet. The Internet brings us a world of information, instantly. Using our computers, tablets, or smartphones, we can find information about almost anything, anywhere, anytime, with very little effort. For some things, such as simple facts about train schedules or ticket prices, checking one website may be enough. But when you want to get a clear idea of something you don’t understand, you need to look in more than one place. If you check just one site, it’s like touching only one part of an elephant. You can easily get the wrong idea.
As Mika’s father tells her this month, “You can’t trust everything on the Internet.” Gather information from many sites. Develop your own opinion based on many sources.
When you use the Internet, remember to use your brain, too!
