トムさんは、日本語を聞いて理解しようとする時、頭の中でどんなふうにしているんですか？
Mmm, well, since the verb, the key part of any sentence, generally comes at the end in Japanese. You cant’t piece things together completely until the person finishes talking. By that time, you might have forgotten the information that came before.

日本語は verb 動詞が最後に来るので、話し終わるまで待たないと全体の意味がわからないという所が大変なんですね。(In Japanese, the verb comes at the end, so the problem is that you have to wait until the sentence is finished to understand the whole meaning.)

To understand spoken Japanese, then you have to be good at using the information at the beginning to predict what’s going to come later. And it took me a while to get to that point.

そこで文の初めの部分を聞いたら、その後がどんな流れになるのかをpredict予想することが日本語では必要なんです。
(So, in Japanese, when you hear the first part of a sentence, you have to predict what will happen after that.)
