Philippines, China blame each other for ship collisions

The Philippines and China have traded blame over collisions of their ships in the disputed South China Sea. Manila said Monday it’ll launch an investigation into the incidents.
A video released by the Philippine military shows the bow of a Chinese coast guard vessel hit the rear of a Philippine supply boat near Second Thomas Shoal in the Spratly Islands on Sunday. Manila also says a Chinese maritime militia vessel bumped into a Philippine Coast Guard patrol ship escorting the supply boat.
The Philippines’ defense minister stressed the collisions took place in his country’s exclusive economic zone. He claimed Beijing is “deliberately obfuscating the truth” about the incidents.
Beijing says the Philippine vessels ignored warnings and caused the collisions by navigating recklessly. It says the Philippine side is wholly to blame.

More and more people here in Japan are being attacked by bears. Two were mauled Thursday in the northeastern prefecture of Iwate. One was found dead.
The most incidents have been reported in Akita Prefecture, also in the northeast. Five people were attacked Thursday in an urban area.
NHK found at least 152 people have been hurt by bears since April. Attacks have been reported in 17 of Japan’s 47 prefectures. And the number is rising faster than ever.
A member of a Toyama prefectural government task force says bears are increasingly coming down to lowland areas because of a shortage of food such as beechnuts.
The central and local governments are urging people to be extra careful, as bears tend to do more damage at this time of year before they hibernate.

We turn now to Jakarta, where young business leaders from Japan and ASEAN countries participated in an event to promote ties.
The Japanese government hosted Wednesday’s event as Japan and ASEAN mark the 50th anniversary of friendship and cooperation this year. Many of the participants were startup entrepreneurs from Japan and Southeast Asian countries.
They are mostly in their 20s and are referred to as “Generation Z.” The participants hope to enhance their connections with businesspeople and officials in the region.

“Japan and ASEAN should not be donor and recipient nations. We should motivate, encourage, and collaborate with each other.”
Japan will also host a business leaders’ summit in central Japan in December.

Japan probes Google for alleged antitrust violations

Japan’s antitrust watchdog has begun a probe into Google, suspecting that it is pressuring manufacturers to favor its smartphone browser.

“We will examine the case from the viewpoint that free and fair competition should not be hindered.”
The Japan Fair Trade Commission says the U.S. tech giant is suspected of violating the Antimonopoly Law. The commission suspects that if smartphone makers install the Google Play app store, the tech giant pressures them to also install its Chrome browser and search engine and put them in a certain position on the screen.
Google reportedly shares revenue from ads linked to its search engine with smartphone makers on the condition that they block rival search services.

High school students preparing for the next stage in their lives have flocked to a shrine in southwestern Japan, where they prayed that they will pass their entrance exams.
Dazaifu Tenmangu in Fukuoka Prefecture enshrines an aristocrat named Sugawara no Michizane. October 18 marks the date he was promoted to the highest rank for a scholar over a millennium ago.
Hundreds of students and their families joined the ceremony, hoping it would bring them scholastic success.

The worshipers passed through a gate decorated with a dragon and carp based on an ancient Chinese legend about a gateway to success.
