French President Emmanuel Macron has weighed in on the recent tension between China and the United States over Taiwan. He says it’s not in Europe’s interest to take sides.
Macron was speaking in an interview with French financial newspaper Les Echos and other media outlets. His comments come just days after Macron met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in China.
Macron says in the interview that the worst thing would be to think that Europeans must follow either America’s or China’s actions over Taiwan. He also says Europe should take the time to build its position as a “third pole” between the two countries.
But Macron’s remarks drew harsh criticism from a European Parliament member who leads a delegation for relations with China. A tweet by Reinhard Butikofer calls Macron’s visit to China a “complete disaster.”

More restaurant chains in Japan are taking egg items off their menus as a bird flu outbreak pushes up prices. Shortages of eggs have begun to widen, as a record number of chickens have been culled for the disease this season.
The Gusto casual restaurant chain temporarily stopped serving omelets last week. Coffee chain operator Komeda said last week it may not be able to offer some dishes, including egg salad sandwiches, at some outlets.
The hamburger steak restaurant chain Bikkuri-Donkey suspended fried egg and toast and some other items at 60 outlets in late March. The Yoshinoya beef bowl chain has given up a plan to serve a chicken-and-egg bowl as a limited-time menu and is serving a grilled chicken bowl instead.
Credit research firm Teikoku Databank says at least 28 out of 100 listed restaurant chains in Japan have taken egg dishes off their menus as of April 5. The number was up by 10 from a month earlier.

Kurdish people in Japan applying for refugee status have voiced opposition to immigration rule amendments under deliberation in the Japanese Diet.
Kurds and their supporters argue that if the amendments are enacted, those staying in Japan could face deportation.
Under current immigration law, deportations are suspended while refugee status applications are being processed. The revised bills in principle drop this automatic suspension of deportation orders for individuals making their third or more application.
One Kurdish 18-year-old university student has applied for refugee status four times and is now on provisional release. He has lived in Japan since he was 2 years old.

Yahoo Japan is testing a system that allows people to go out shopping without having to bring any money, cards, or their phone. To pay for their goods, all shoppers need to show are their faces.
Facial-recognition technology is behind the system. The company is testing it at one of its retail outlets that sells food and daily necessities.
Users register photos of their faces on a smartphone website and link their personal accounts with a cashless payment service.
While shopping, they scan items’ bar codes and then show their faces to a recognition device. When the system matches the image to that of the registered photo, it approves the payment.
Yahoo Japan hopes the system can help alleviate a labor shortage in the retail industry. The company says it will continue to tweak the technology with the aim of introducing it at convenience stores and supermarket chains.

Germany ended its use of nuclear power by shutting down its last three power stations on Saturday. Former Chancellor Angela Merkel adopted a nuclear phase-out policy following the 2011 accident at Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.
The government initially planned to shut down all the plants by December of last year. But it delayed the move after Russia cut natural gas supplies to Germany following its invasion of Ukraine.
Members of civic groups gathered near one of the final three plants in southern Germany to mark the end of the country’s nuclear policy. They rejoiced and called for a swift change to renewable energy.
But some people are still urging the government to use nuclear power. A recent opinion poll shows that 59 percent of the people in Germany are opposed to the abolition of nuclear power plants, while 34 percent supported it.
