Students, school is in session. This is Tom Kane, ready to get going on today’s lesson.

トムさん、いかがですか？
I remember going randoseru shopping when my kids were starting school and there were so many options then and it sounds like the selection. Just keeps on getting more diverse. My son tells me a popular color for firstgrade’s at his school is Emerald green.

Randoseru is a firm-sided backpack made of stitched firm leather or leather-like synthetic material, most commonly used in Japan by elementary schoolchildren. Traditionally it is given to a child upon beginning their first year of school, whereupon the child uses the same bag until grade 6. The term is borrowed from the Dutch ransel or German ranzel meaning “backpack”.

A similar system is used in Western schools. However, compared to Japanese randoseru, such as Schulranzen from Germany and Boekentas from Nederland, many of them are simpler and lighter in material.

ランドセルとは、硬い革や革に似た合成素材を縫い合わせて作られた、しっかりとした側面のリュックサックのことで、日本では小学生に最もよく使われています。 伝統的に、これは学校の 1 年目の開始時に子供に与えられ、その後子供は 6 年生まで同じバッグを使用します。この用語は、「バックパック」を意味するオランダ語の ransel またはドイツ語の ranzel から借用されました。

同様のシステムが西洋の学校でも使用されています。 ただし、ドイツのシュルランツェンやオランダのボエケンタスなど、日本のランドセルと比べるとシンプルで素材が軽いものが多いです。
