NAGOYA — The south wall of the main gate of Nagoya Castle here has been vandalized, with the culprits carving letters and numbers into the wall coated with plaster, the city revealed on Jan. 29.

The castle is designated as a national special historic site, and the Nagoya Municipal Government will submit a damage report to the Agency for Cultural Affairs based on the Act on Protection of Cultural Properties.

According to the castle administrative office, a security guard patrolling the site noticed the damage around 2 p.m. on Jan. 27. In addition to a person’s name and numbers that appeared to be a date, the words “keibi amai” (security is lax) were written on a 130-centimeter square of the wall. The wall was made of concrete coated with plaster, and the letters and numbers were written on it as if they had been scraped off with a pointed object.

名古屋城は国の特別史跡に指定されており、名古屋市は文化財保護法に基づく被害届を文化庁に提出する。
同城管理事務所によると、27日午後2時ごろ、敷地内を巡回していた警備員が被害に気付いた。塀の約130センチ四方には、人名や日付らしき数字のほか、「警備甘い」と書かれていた。壁はコンクリートに漆喰を塗ったもので、文字や数字は尖ったもので削ったように書かれていた。
