KITAKYUSHU — The government of this southwest Japan city, which is battling a declining and aging population, will establish a “Generation Z division” in April to encourage young people to settle here.

Kitakyushu has the highest proportion of people aged 65 or over among 20 ordinance-designated major cities in the country, at 31%. The municipal government aims to create a city where young people, including Gen Zers (born in the late 1990s to around 2010), want to live.

Young people have continued to move out of the city. To encourage them to settle in Kitakyushu, the city plans to focus on projects that support them in challenges and formulate policies for them. According to the city, it is the first local government in Japan to establish a section named “Generation Z.”

北九州市–人口減少と高齢化に悩む南西部の北九州市は、若者の定住を促進するため、4月に「ジェネレーションZ課」を設置する。

北九州市は65歳以上の高齢者の割合が全国20の政令指定都市の中で最も高く、31％を占める。北九州市は、Z世代（1990年代後半から2010年頃生まれ）を含む若者が住みたくなる街づくりを目指している。

若者の市外流出が続いている。北九州市は、彼らの定住を促進するため、彼らのチャレンジを支援する事業に力を入れ、政策を立案していく方針だ。同市によると、”ジェネレーションZ “と名付けたセクションを設置した自治体は全国で初めてだという。
