KUMAMOTO, Japan (Kyodo) — Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., the world’s largest contract chipmaker, held an opening ceremony for its first factory in Japan on Saturday, with more investment planned to build a second plant.

The factory, built in the town of Kikuyo in the southwestern prefecture of Kumamoto, is set to start mass production of mature-technology semiconductors, including 12-nanometer chips used in automobiles and industrial equipment, in the October-December quarter this year.

熊本、日本 (共同通信) — 世界最大の受託チップメーカー、台湾積体電路製造公司は土曜日に日本での最初の工場の開所式を開催し、第 2 工場の建設にさらなる投資が計画されている。

熊本県南西部の菊陽町に建設されたこの工場は、今年10～12月期に自動車や産業機器に使用される12ナノメートルチップを含む成熟技術半導体の量産を開始する予定だ。
