防災のための英会話 (English conversation for disaster prevention)
「世界横断の旅」 北米編、 今月の舞台は僕の故郷でもあるフロリダ! フロリダはとても大きな州で、面積は日本のおよそ半分。
そんな広大なフロリダに、お気に入りのビーチがあります。
(“Trip across the world” North America Edition This month’s stage is Florida, which is also my hometown! Florida is a very large state, about half the area of Japan. I have my favorite beach in such vast Florida.)
それが僕の故郷サラソタ近くにあるシエスタビーチ。
(That’s Siesta Beach near my hometown Sarasota.)
下の写真はそのシエスタ ビーチで撮影したもの。
砂は細かく真っ白で、 まるで粉のよう。
かつてはある雑誌で 「No. 1 Beach in the USA」 にも選ばれたと、 地元の人たちはいまだにアピールしています。 それはちょっと言いすぎかもしれません(笑)。
その一方で、フロリダはしばしば自然災害のリスクにさらされる州でもあります。 いちばん有名な自然災害はハリケーンですが、 突然の豪雨や暴風、落雷、山火事、鉄砲水も、 毎年州のどこかで時々発生しています。
(On the other hand, Florida is also a state that is often exposed to the risk of natural disasters. Hurricanes are the most famous natural disasters, but sudden downpours, storms, lightning strikes, wildfires, and flash floods also occur occasionally in parts of the state each year.)
こうした緊急事態についての表現は国や地域を問わず活用できます。
(These expressions for emergency situations can be used regardless of country or region.)
さらに、これらの災害が原因で停電や断水も起こりますよね。
(In addition, these disasters also cause power outages and water outages.)
日本とは違って、フロリダでは基本的に地震は起こりませんが、 非常時の備えが必要なのは同じ。
(Unlike Japan, earthquakes do not occur in Florida, but we still need to be prepared for emergencies.)

ところで、ジェニーさんはフロリダの某有名テーマパークで、数年間プロの歌手として働いていたことも。
(By the way, Jenny also worked as a professional singer at a famous theme park in Florida for several years.)
それもあって、 僕とジェニーさんはフロリダでの思い出をお互いに語り合いました。 この思い出話の様子は、ラジオやテキストで皆さんにシェアしますね。
(Because of that, Jenny and I shared our memories in Florida with each other. I will share this reminiscence with you all through radio and text.)
