JAPAN BIDS FAREWELL TO FORMER PM ABE
2022年7月12日のニュース
People in Japan are saying their goodbyes to former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo. He was shot dead during a campaign event last Friday just days before the Upper House election. A funeral was held in Tokyo on Tuesday.
Family members, close friends, and allies commemorated Abe’s life at Zojoji Temple. Mourners lined up to pay their respects to Japan’s longest-serving prime minister.
After the funeral, a motorcade carrying Abe’s body made a farewell trip. People waited on the sidewalks as it journeyed through the city.
The motorcade passed by places central to Japanese politics, including the Prime Minister’s Office. Prime Minister Kishida Fumio and his Cabinet members made a farewell at the entrance of the office – Abe’s workplace for more than eight years.

JOHNSON AGREES TO RESIGN
2022年7月8日のニュース
Boris Johnson says, in politics, no one is indispensable. He says it’s the will of his party to have a new leader and, therefore, a new British prime minister. So he’ll step down to make way for whoever comes next.
Johnson led the United Kingdom out of the European Union two years ago, then steered it through the pandemic. But he faced a rebellion from other Conservatives, including those in his own cabinet.
He attended parties at his office and residence during pandemic lockdowns. His appointment of an ally who’d been accused of sexual misconduct proved to be one scandal too much.
Dozens of ministers and aides stepped down in an exodus that would have made governing a challenge. And Johnson had exhausted his supply of loyalists.
Johnson says it’s painful not to be able to see through other projects. But, in his typical style, he says, “Them’s the breaks.”

JAPAN GETS ZERO-ENERGY FACTORY
2022年7月7日のニュース
A Japanese information and communications technology company has fully started operating their so-called “smart factory.” It takes advantage of the latest digital technology along with consuming zero electricity.
Oki Electric Industry displayed the facility north of Tokyo to the media on Wednesday. It has a floor space of over 18,000 square meters. That makes it Japan’s first large-size plant certified as a net zero energy building.
Solar panels on the roof help keep the factory running. Energy-saving features make sure the power isn’t wasted. It includes a system that automatically adjusts lighting and air conditioning based on operations.
There are also advanced technologies to efficiently run the factory. Projection mapping shows workers how to assemble parts. An AI imaging system analyzes if they are following the best procedures.
The facility produces telephones and wireless communications equipment, among other products.

UN: INDIA POPULATION SET TO SURPASS CHINA IN 2023
2022年7月12日のニュース
The United Nations says the global population will reach 8 billion people by the end of the year. And by the end of 2023, India will become the world’s most populous country.
A UN report confirms China currently holds that title, with a population of 1.4 billion. But India is not far behind and is projected to overtake that record and continue growing.
The UN estimates by 2050, India will be home to more than 1.6 billion people. Efforts to curb growth have been unable to offset a boom caused by India’s declining infant mortality rate.
Meanwhile, China is still feeling the effects of its one-child policy, which ran from around 1980 to 2015. Beijing has now shifted its focus toward raising its fertility rate, as its number of elderly citizens grows larger.

The early works of major Japanese artist Okamoto Taro were long thought to have been destroyed in World War II. But a rare find in Paris suggests all is not lost.
Okamoto is known for creations such as the “Tower of the Sun” monument. He spent his late teens and 20s in the French capital after moving there in 1930.
Okamoto’s paintings from that time were believed to have been lost when his home in Tokyo burned down during the war. But in February, officials who research and collect the artist’s works acquired three abstract paintings recently unearthed in Paris. One is said to carry his signature.
Experts say it’s highly likely they’re all by Okamoto. And they’re pointing to a strikingly similar style in his first collection.

“These paintings represent the origins of Taro’s works.”
