NATO WELCOMES FINLAND, 31ST MEMBER
2023年4月5日のニュース

The members of NATO have reshaped the post-Cold War security landscape. They’ve welcomed Finland into their alliance.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced the accession along with Finnish President Sauli Niinisto at NATO headquarters in Brussels. The event marks the end of decades of military non-alignment for Finland.
The country has a border with Russia that runs about 1,300 kilometers. Helsinki changed its policy in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and applied last May for NATO membership together with neighboring Sweden.
After the foreign ministers’ meeting of NATO allies, Stoltenberg said NATO continues its long-term commitment to Ukraine.

“Allies made clear that we remain committed to NATO’s open door policy. We encourage Ukraine to continue on the path of reforms even in difficult times.”

TRADE SHOW IN TOKYO SHOWCASES FASHION AND TECH
2023年4月5日のニュース

A fashion trade show has kicked off in Tokyo that’s showing the latest styles while offering a glimpse of how technology could reshape the industry.
About 750 companies, including apparel makers and IT firms from Japan and around the world, are taking part in Fashion World Tokyo.
An IT firm from Taiwan is showing off tech that could take the guesswork out of shopping from home. It lets people try on accessories on screen. Artificial intelligence analyzes a person’s body shape. It then creates a virtual image of the item on the shopper even when they move.
A company from Kyoto is offering lifelike replications of fabrics. The patterns and textures are imaged in 3D to show how they would look in different lighting and shapes. The company believes such technology has the potential to help cut waste in the fashion industry.

U.S.: LEAK MAY INCLUDE ‘HIGHLY-CLASSIFIED’ MATERIAL
2023年4月11日のニュース

U.S. government officials are scrambling to deal with the fallout from leaked documents related to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The Department of Defense says the materials may contain highly-classified information.
The New York Times reported last week the classified documents concerning the invasion were circulating on social media. It cited high-ranking officials of the administration under President Joe Biden.
On Monday, a Pentagon spokesperson said the photographed documents appear to be in the same format as those used to provide daily updates to senior leaders related to the situation in Ukraine.
The spokesperson said the Pentagon is assessing social media posts that appear in some cases to contain “sensitive and highly-classified material.” The spokesperson added the Justice Department has opened an investigation.
A senior White House official says the government is taking the issue very seriously and noted U.S. officials have been in touch with relevant allies and partners.

DOMESTIC TRAVEL IN JAPAN TO RETURN TO PRE-COVID LEVELS
2023年4月7日のニュース

Japan’s biggest travel agency says the number of people visiting domestic destinations during the upcoming spring holiday will be at pre-pandemic levels. But it expects figures for international travel to remain down.
JTB conducted a survey of holiday plans from late April through early May. It found that about 24.5 million people will visit domestic destinations during the period. That’s up 53 percent from last year and is roughly the same as the figure from 2019.
The survey also found that many people are opting to take shorter trips. Thirty-nine percent plan to travel for two days, and 33 percent for three days.
But outbound international travel still hasn’t recovered completely. Two hundred thousand people plan to go overseas, about one-fifth the figure from 2019.

LVMH OWNER TOPS WORLD’S RICHEST-PEOPLE LIST
2023年4月6日のニュース

U.S. business magazine Forbes says the owner of French luxury brand empire LVMH has replaced U.S. entrepreneur Elon Musk as the world’s richest person.
Bernard Arnault and his family climbed to the top spot in the magazine’s “The Richest People in the World” rankings. LVMH owns 75 brands including Louis Vuitton. He and his family’s wealth is estimated at 211 billion dollars.
Musk is second with personal assets of 180 billion dollars. The Tesla CEO topped the list for the first time last year.
Fast Retailing Chairperson and CEO Yanai Tadashi and his family are the highest-ranking Japanese nationals, coming in at 39th. His company runs the Uniqlo casual clothing chain.
Forbes says the number of people with assets of one billion dollars or more fell by 28 to 2,640. The main reasons were declining stock prices and rising interest rates.
