LEADERS TRADE BLAME FOR DAM DISASTER

We begin in southern Ukraine, where tens of thousands of people have been displaced by the destruction of a major dam. Kyiv and Moscow have traded blame as officials on both sides scramble to provide humanitarian aid.
Russian troops have occupied the hydroelectric dam on the Dnipro River since last year. Ukrainian officials had previously warned Moscow may try to destroy it, and now say that’s what’s happened.

The Kremlin denies responsibility and blames Ukraine.

“In order to prevent a Russian offensive in this sector, the Kyiv regime committed an act of sabotage, effectively a terrorist attack.”
Meanwhile, the operators say stopping the water is impossible, which could mean thousands of residents under evacuation order may not know when they can go home.

NEARLY HALF OF ELIGIBLE MEN TOOK PATERNITY LEAVE IN JAPAN LAST YEAR

A survey by Japan’s biggest business organization shows that nearly half of eligible male workers took child care leave last year. That’s up 18 percentage points from the year before.
The Japan Business Federation, also known as Keidanren, conducted the poll from April to early May. Two hundred and seventy-eight firms responded. The average period of leave was 44 days. Nearly 60 percent of respondents stayed at home for a month or longer.
A legal revision that came into force in October 2022 gives male workers up to four weeks of paternity leave. Before then, relatively few men took time off after the birth of their children.
Last year’s trend for relatively long leave periods was strongest at large firms. But the numbers tend to be lower at smaller firms with no more than 300 employees. Only about one in three men who took leave at those companies stayed at home for a month or longer. Forty-six percent took fewer than five days off.

SUSHI CHAIN SUES PRANKSTER FOR HARMING ITS BUSINESS

The operator of a major Japanese conveyor-belt sushi chain is suing a customer for damages after he posted a prank video on social media. The Osaka-based company claims the video hurt its business and share price.
Akindo Sushiro filed the lawsuit with the Osaka District Court. It’s seeking more than 67 million yen, or about 480,000 dollars, in damages. The video shows a customer licking a soy sauce bottle at the chain’s Gifu City restaurant in central Japan in January.
Akindo Sushiro says the video led to a significant drop in customers nationwide and a sharp decline in the share price of its parent company. It says it suffered a loss of about 115 million dollars as a result. The company says the prank offended many of its customers and damaged their trust in its hygienic controls.

4 CHILDREN FOUND ALIVE WEEKS AFTER AMAZON JUNGLE PLANE CRASH

Dramatic footage has emerged of rescue workers uniting with four missing children in the Amazon jungle after a search of about 40 days.
The indigenous siblings aged from one to 13 were on board a small plane that crashed in a forest in southern Colombia on May 1. They were found alive on Friday at the end of a joint search launched last month by the Colombian military and local indigenous people.
Three adults, including the mother and the pilot, had been confirmed dead in the crash. But the children were believed to be alive, as searchers found discarded pieces of fruit with what appeared to be human bite marks in the area.
Local media say none of the children is in a life-threatening condition, although they’re suffering dehydration and insect bites.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro praised the joint operation, saying indigenous people know the jungle very well. He said the children’s survival was great and exemplary.

RESEARCHERS: ARCTIC MAY BE FREE OF ICE IN SUMMER BY 2030s

Scientists are warning the Arctic may become ice-free during the summer as early as the 2030s. Their research underscores the impact that greenhouse gas emissions are having on the Arctic.
A team of South Korean and other researchers published their findings on Tuesday in the science journal Nature Communications. Their prediction is based on simulations that utilize data from 1979 to 2019.
Arctic sea ice typically shrinks during the summer and the fall. The results of the simulations indicate the ice may completely melt by the month of September as early as the 2030s.
The researchers say if an unprecedented ice-free Arctic climate happens, the warming could accelerate. They also warn that would greatly impact human society and the ecosystem.
