TOKYO — “It’s important to take care of your health. If you catch a cold, all your hard work up until now will be for nothing,” said a teacher at The Naganuma School, a Japanese language school in Tokyo’s Shibuya Ward, in mid-January ahead of Japanese university entrance exams as foreign students preparing for the tests nodded and listened solemnly.

The school’s students hail from regions ranging from North America to Europe and East Asia. Many are studying hard to enroll in universities in Japan this spring, the same as Japanese high schoolers going on to post-secondary studies.

東京都渋谷区の日本語学校長沼校の教師は「健康管理が大切。風邪をひいたら今までの努力が水の泡だ」と語った。 日本の大学入学試験を控えた1月中旬、試験を控えた外国人留学生たちがうなずき、厳粛に話を聞いていた。

この学校の学生は、北米からヨーロッパ、東アジアに至るまでの地域の出身です。 日本の高校生が中等教育以降の教育を受けるのと同じように、多くの人がこの春、日本の大学に入学するために一生懸命勉強しています。
