「現地の愛称」は世界とつながるとっておきの技 (“Local nicknames” are a special skill to connect with the world)
英語で世界の人とつながる国際コミュニケーションとして、今年度は現地の言葉を取り入れながら会話をしてきました。 (This year, as part of our international communication to connect with people around the world in English, we have been incorporating local languages into our conversations.)
スウェーデンではGod morgon. (おはようございます)、 オランダでは Bedankt. (ありがとうございます)、 そして今月の舞台カナダでは文末の 「ね」 を表すeh?がありましたね。

さらに今回は国や州など、 現地の愛称、 ニックネームを会話に取り入れる練習をしました。
(Furthermore, this time we practiced incorporating local nicknames such as countries and states into conversations.)
カナダの愛称は The Great White North (偉大なる白い北国)。
僕はこの愛称を大学生のころに流行歌で知り、カナダ人との会話でさりげなく使っていました。
(I learned of this nickname from a popular song when I was a university student, and I casually used it in conversations with Canadians.)
ちなみに、 アメリカ合衆国の愛称は The Land of the Free (自由の地) です。

アメリカ合衆国の州にもそれぞれ愛称があります。 いくつか代表的なものを押さえましょう。 相手がアメリカ人であれば、 会話の中に州の愛称が出てくると喜んでもらえるはずです。
(Each state in the United States also has a nickname. Let’s highlight some representative ones. If the person you’re talking to is American, they’ll be happy to hear the state’s nickname come up in conversation.)
