カタカナを手がかりに世界とコミュニケーション!
カタカナ表記そのままで英語を発音すると 相手に通じにくいことがあるかもしれません。 そこで、カタカナはそのまま発音するより、ネイティブが発音するように少しコンパクトに言ってみましょう。カラオケで洋楽を歌うとき、 字幕のカタカナをコンパクトに発音して実践してみてもいいですね。
(If you pronounce English in katakana notation as it is, it may be difficult for the other person to understand you. Therefore, rather than pronouncing katakana as it is, let’s say it a little more concisely so that native speakers would pronounce it. When singing Western music at karaoke, it would be nice to practice pronouncing the katakana subtitles compactly.)
ところで、世界的に有名な芸術家の 「ゴッホ」 や 「ミケランジェロ」、 あるいは地名の「フィレンツェ」や「ベネチア」について、 カタカナそのままの発音だと、 おそらく英語としては通じにくいでしょう。 しかし、これらは現地の言語に沿ったカタカナ表記なので、現地では意外と通じるはずです。
(By the way, the names of world-famous artists such as Van Gogh and Michelangelo, or the names of places such as Florence and Venice, are probably difficult to understand in English if they are pronounced in katakana. However, these are written in katakana according to the local language, so you should be able to understand them unexpectedly.)
会話の相手は必ずしも英語圏の人とは限りません。 「世界横断の旅」という今年度のテーマのとおり、 世界中の人々との円滑なコミュニケーションを目指しましょうね。

アムステルダムの 「運河 (canal)」
カタカナの発音ヒントは「カナール」。 発音が珍しくコンパクトではなく、少し伸びます。 実は今年度の講座を準備するときに初めて、僕は canal にあたる日本語 「運河」を知りました。 この言葉がとてもエキゾチックな響きで、 初めはびっくりしました。 「ウンガ」は僕にとってままるでスワヒリ語やサモア語のような響きです。
(The pronunciation hint for katakana is “kanaru”. Pronunciation is not unusual and compact, it stretches a little. In fact, when I was preparing for this year’s course, I first learned about the Japanese word for canal. This word sounds very exotic, and I was surprised at first. “Unga” sounds like Swahili or Samoan to me.)
