オクラホマへようこそ! (Welcome to Oklahoma!)
ヨーロッパでの4か月を経て、 今月からはアメリカ大陸へ。 北米編ナビゲーターはこの講座でおなじみのジェニーさんです。 実はオクラホマは彼女のお父さんの故郷で、思い出深い場所。 番組の収録の合間に、ジェニーさんは人柄の温かい南部の親族について話してくれます。
(After 4 months in Europe, from this month to the Americas. The North American version navigator is Jenny who is familiar with this course. Oklahoma is actually her father’s hometown, and it’s a memorable place. Between tapings on the show, Jenny tells us about her warm-hearted Southern relatives.)

アメリカの文化圏について(bout the American Cultural Sphere)
アメリカは50州もあり、 国土も広いので、同じアメリカでも各地で文化は異なります。 ただし、 州ごとに異なるというわけでもなく、 より大きなくくりでいくつかの文化圏に分かれると思います。
(The United States has 50 states and is a large country, so even within the same country, the culture differs from place to place. However, it does not differ from state to state, and I think that it is divided into several cultural areas based on a broader framework.)

今回のオクラホマはテキサスを中心とした南西部の文化圏に属します。 (Oklahoma this time belongs to the southwestern cultural area centered on Texas.) 現地に特徴的な表現のしかたで、 「こんにちは」 を Hey there. や Howdy. と言ったり、「皆さん」 を y’all (you all の省略形) と言ったりします。 オクラホマだけでなく、 より広くそれぞれの地域のこともどんどん学んでいきましょう。
We will learn about not only Oklahoma but also the American Southwest.

アメリカ南部の食文化って?(What is the food culture of the American South?)
南部を代表する魚がナマズ。 ネコのようにひげが生えているイメージで (The representative fish of the south is the catfish. An image of a cat with a whiskers)
catfish と言います。 そして南部で代表的な野菜が日本でもおなじみのオクラ。 では 「オクラ」 を英語で言うと? 答えは okra です。 発音は oak (カシの木) と raの2音。 特に人気の料理が fried okra です。
