「津波」 を英語で言うと?
Day 6 で、 hurricane と比べて typhoon がアメリカのどこででも通じるわけではないという話をしましたが、覚えていますか?
(Remember when I said that typhoon is not universally applicable in America compared to hurricane?)
実は、「津波」についても同じことが言えます。
(In fact, the same can be said about tsunamis.)
アジアやアメリカ西海岸のカリフォルニア、あるいは南米では、地域によっては英語でそのままtsunami と言っても通じるかもしれません。
(In Asia, California on the west coast of the United States, or South America, depending on the region, you may be able to say the word tsunami in English.)
しかし、 アメリカ東海岸やヨーロッパでは tidal wave という表現が一般的です。
(However, on the East Coast of the United States and Europe, the expression tidal wave is more common.)

地震の大きさについて伝える、尋ねるコツ
日本では地震のニュースで「震度」 や 「マグニチュード」をよく耳にしますが、英語のニュースで多く使われるのは日本でも知られるmagnitude で、 a magnitude 6 earthquake (マグニチュード6の地震)のように言います。
また、 マグニチュードの一種である Richter scale (リヒター・スケール) もニュースではよく聞きます。
例えば、The earthquake measured 6.5 on the Richter scale. (地震はリヒター・スケールで6.5の大きさでした)
世の中にはさまざまな地震の測定基準があるので、もし地震の被害に遭った友人を気にかけて尋ねるなら、マグニチュードやリヒター・スケールを聞くよりも実際の被害の状況を聞くと分かりやすいでしょう。
(There are various measurement standards for earthquakes in the world, so if you are concerned about asking a friend who has been affected by an earthquake, it may be easier to understand the actual damage rather than asking about the magnitude or Richter scale.)
「被害はありましたか? (Was there any damage?)」 や
「誰かけがをしましたか? (Did anyone get hurt?)」 のような表現で、地震の影響を広く聞くことができます。
