Thelma and Emily have a mutual friend, Beth. Beth and Thelma are not going along these days.
テルマは、エミリーと共通の友達ベスとあまりうまくいっていません。
(Thelma doesn’t get along very well with Emily’s mutual friend Beth.)

テルマとベスは相変わらず話をしていません。
(Thelma and Beth still don’t talk.)
エミリーがそのことを話題に出すと、 テルマはエミリーに、「ベスとの仲介をしてもらいたい」
(When Emily brought up the topic, Thelma told Emily, “‘d like you to mediate with Beth.”)
というキモチで Do you think you could…? を使っています。
「あなたは〜できると思いますか?」 が直訳ですが、 「〜してもらったりできるでしょうか?」といった依頼の意味になります。
親しい間柄では少し改まってお願いをするときなどに使います。
(It is used when making a slightly formal request among close friends.)
